You might think that talking about helmets isn’t that important but it is. The use of helmets can save lives! It really gets to me when people don’t wear helmets and I’ll tell you why.
Here’s a true story about a girl called Jean. One day Jean went to the riding stables with two other people who had never ridden before. So Jean got her favourite horse – a black gelding named Henry. Half way through the ride Jean fell off when Henry jumped over a puddle of water. She knocked herself unconscious and if she wasn’t wearing a helmet, she could have died!
Why are helmets important?
Helmets are important because they protect our heads. And everyone needs one of those. There are required standards for safety helmets. They are: USA – ASTMF1163 (or the most recent ASTM F1163-04a); UK – UK PAS015; Europe: EN 1384 or EN 14572; Australia/New Zealand: AS/NZ 3838.
What do they do?
A helmet acts as a hard shell that takes most of the cracking force (impact) of a fall. If you are lucky, you will just get up and walk away from a fall thanks to your helmet. But if you are unlucky, you might have to go to hospital (like Jean). People can die from falls.
Fitting:
It’s important that a riding helmet fit you properly and that it meets the standards for your country. Going to a good tack shop and asking for assistance is a good idea. Remember that you should always wear your helmet across your brow and have the straps done before you mount your horse.
I think you get the idea. After all, safety is important. If you are injured then you can’t take proper care of your animals.

Why I want to be a veterinarian
Isn't it obvious? I love animals.
I've always had an interest in animal health and animal behaviour.
I am lucky because I have worked with horses, dogs, cats and fish. Working closely with dogs and horses - in particular - I have learned bits and pieces about some of their diseases and treatments.
Another advantage I have is that I was raised in an animal friendly house by an animal behaviourist.
Oh and because I love animals, they love me.
